Typographic Texture in Publications

1. Dwell Magazine

Here we have a very simple layout done beautifully with typography. The body of the article is arranged in columns, flowing in traditional use of a single font for the body of the text. Though different typefaces are being used, the type is horizontally arranged on all pages. The hierarchy of the text in the pages differentiates the purpose of each text.

2. The OK Review

The body of the text is a traditional, with the exception of the use of type in the beginning of the paragraph. However, the magazine uses experimental typography for the title of the page. There is an interesting play of typographic use with the image and text. The “O” in hero is from the image in the background.

3. etc. publications

This publication is a very smart way to create what looks like a newspaper in to a beautifully designed art poster. There are elements of traditional typography because all type on the page is horizontal. The designer uses type, spacing, and size of font to differentiate each article on the poster.

4. Breaking New Ground

The use of the color and different typeface in the heading gives the article a loud punch to the spread. This a great way of experimental typographic texture.

5. Modern Design Magazine

The use of color and the justification of the body text, aligning to the right of the image of the girl gives a more appealing and artistic approach to designing this spread. Here you can see the experimental approach to the layout, juxtapose to the publications with traditional typographic texture in the examples above.

5 Gestalt Principles of Visual Perception

1. Similarity

Our eyes are directed to the three circles in the middle and we can see the association (a face) made through this relationship.

2. Continuation

Our eyes follow the two lines down to the triangle pointed down.

3. Closure

The letters ‘M’ and the ‘U’ make the form of a mouse. Our mind is filling in the gaps between the letters to see the mouse.

4. Proximity

We see that objects closer to each other more closely related. The grouping of each vegetable is differentiated from the surrounding vegetables.

5. Figure + Ground

Here, our eyes differentiate the airplane from the surrounding letters ‘C’ and ‘D’
